Total lawn replacement is a big deal in small yards, and a huge deal in big yards! Thankfully our client was dreaming big enough for their own space.
This homeowner wanted a pollinator friendly wildlife habitat designed to be like a trail, but that could also support growing their own food and serving as an entertaining space. We created several garden areas for them to experience, linked with a mulch path, provided three raised garden beds for the homeowners to plant flowers and vegetables in. For entertainment we included a timeless firepit feature and a water garden. The pond served three purposes, capturing stormwater, supporting fish and creating that much-loved ambiance that water features bring to the table.
When all was said and done each feature in the space blended satisfyingly into the next, creating cohesion in the separate visions our client wanted to bring together.
Did you say water garden? Fire pit? Walking trails all in one backyard? Lets learn more about this project.
This client just moved into a newly built home and wanted to upgrade the builder grade landscape to a colorful wildlife habitat full of pollinator friendly plants that would cater to his dog. His second request was an area to grow his own food and a luxurious space to entertain guests year-round. His final request was a no mow lawn to reduce maintenance.
When you enter into the backyard, you are immediately greeted with the pond. To get further into the space, you will have to travel over a wood bridge. This pond doesn’t just look nice; it serves as a stormwater management feature. Before the pond, the downspouts on the western half of the house would wash away the mulch and cause erosion on the side yard. The pond has 1.5 feet of free board to absorb stormwater before it overflows. The pond also is over 3 feet deep to be able to support fish year round.
Raised planter beds on either side with a wood arbor create the perfect entry into the backyard where you see the two-tiered patio. The upper tier patio serves as a place to sit down and relax while enjoying the garden areas. The lower tier has a fire pit where the edge of the upper tier serves as seating for the fire pit. A clover lawn in the center of the yard provides a doggy relief area while being a no mow lawn solution.
The rest of the yard is filled with native plants and shrubs that have a mulched path running through it. Along the path intentionally placed shrubs provide dimension and interest that draw you into the space while creating several small “rooms”.
